Among the more significant events in the recent history of long-distance communication have been the building of computer-based communication networks and the development of technologies that have made possible the implementation and exploitation of these networks. In this chapter we focus on these technologies and on the challenges and opportunities for human factors research that they present. We begin with a brief historical overview of computer-communications networking technology. We then focus on current trends, especially the phenomenon of “global connectivity” that networking is coming to represent and some of the implications this could have. In the remainder of the chapter we discuss some of the human factors issues and research needs that relate to networking and its future development and applications. Networks that link computers from different geographical locations are a relatively recent phenomenon.

Stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic, with movie theaters closed and no restaurants to dine in, Americans have been spending more of their lives online. But a New York Times analysis of internet usage in the United States from SimilarWeb and Apptopia, two online data providers, reveals that our behaviors shifted, sometimes starkly, as the virus spread and pushed us to our devices for work, play and connecting.

With nearly all public gatherings called off, Americans are seeking out entertainment on streaming services like Netflix and YouTube, and looking to connect with one another on social media outlets like Facebook. In the past few years, users of these services were increasingly moving to their smartphones, creating an industrywide focus on mobile.

A study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships in September concluded that compulsive app users can end up feeling lonelier than they did in the first place.

While Julie Beck, a staff writer for The Atlantic, made waves with an article addressing the rise of dating app fatigue three years ago, stands out as the moment that deeper discussions about the downsides of dating apps and debates about the feasibility of going without them went mainstream. Meanwhile research analytics firm eMarketer predicted a slowdown in user growth for mainstream online platforms, with more users switching between apps than new people entering the market.

Social change , in sociology , the alteration of mechanisms within the social structure , characterized by changes in cultural symbols, rules of behaviour, social organizations, or value systems. Throughout the historical development of their discipline , sociologists have borrowed models of social change from other academic fields.

In the late 19th century, when evolution became the predominant model for understanding biological change, ideas of social change took on an evolutionary cast, and, though other models have refined modern notions of social change, evolution persists as an underlying principle. In the midth century, anthropologists borrowed from the linguistic theory of structuralism to elaborate an approach to social change called structural functionalism.

This theory postulated the existence of certain basic institutions including kinship relations and division of labour that determine social behaviour. Because of their interrelated nature, a change in one institution will affect other institutions. Various theoretical schools emphasize different aspects of change. Marxist theory suggests that changes in modes of production can lead to changes in class systems, which can prompt other new forms of change or incite class conflict.

A different view is conflict theory, which operates on a broad base that includes all institutions. The focus is not only on the purely divisive aspects of conflict, because conflict, while inevitable, also brings about changes that promote social integration. Taking yet another approach, structural-functional theory emphasizes the integrating forces in society that ultimately minimize instability.

Social change can evolve from a number of different sources, including contact with other societies diffusion , changes in the ecosystem which can cause the loss of natural resources or widespread disease , technological change epitomized by the Industrial Revolution , which created a new social group , the urban proletariat , and population growth and other demographic variables.

Fewer Americans are married today than at any point in at least 50 years. This argument ignores well-documented changes in demand that have caused the earnings of many Americans to decline. The decline in marriage is concentrated among these very same Americans. A large body of evidence links the decline in employment and earnings for less-skilled workers to globalization, technological change, and changes in labor market institutions—changes beyond the ability of individuals to control no matter what their values are.

Rather than focusing on changing values, a more effective approach to addressing both poverty and marriage may be to improve economic opportunities for all Americans, particularly for low-skilled, less-educated workers. Contrary to much of the hype around the decline in marriage, there are positive outcomes worth noting.

Many companies have experimented with the idea of remote working as the technology to enable it has slowly matured. But suddenly, a global pandemic has forced companies all over the world to rapidly and fundamentally change their way of working to preserve some productivity. We’ve never believed that creating a Radar remotely was possible, and yet here we are — this is the first Radar we’ve ever produced without meeting in person. Many of the proposed blips spoke to the pressing need to enable first-class remote collaboration.

Advances in computer-based information technology in recent years have led to a wide variety of systems that managers are now using to make and implement decisions. Too often, unfortunately, managers have little say in the development of these decision support sysems; at the same time, non-managers who do develop them have a limited view of how they can be used.

In spite of these drawbacks, the author found that a number of the 56 systems he studied are successful. And the difference between success and failure is the extent to which managers can use the system to increase their effectiveness within their organizations. What can managers realistically expect from computers other than a pile of reports a foot deep dumped on their desks every other week?

Everyone knows, for instance, that computers are great at listing receivables.

Dating is a stage of romantic relationships in humans whereby two people meet socially with the aim of each assessing the other’s suitability as a prospective partner in an intimate relationship. Access to energy is a key pillar for human wellbeing, economic development and poverty alleviation. Ensuring everyone has sufficient access is an ongoing and pressing challenge for global development. However, our energy systems also have important environmental impacts. Historical and current energy systems are dominated by fossil fuels coal, oil and gas which produce carbon dioxide CO 2 and other greenhouse gases — the fundamental driver of global climate change. If we are to meet our global climate targets and avoid dangerous climate change, the world needs a significant and concerted transition in its energy sources.

Balancing the challenge between development and environment therefore provides us with an ultimate goal of ensuring everyone has access to enough sustainable energy to maintain a high standard of living. Just last week, the Presidency of the G20 passed from Germany to Argentina. Argentina has made clear that the future of work will be a priority for its Presidency. So the topic of the future of work is a topical one. I suspect I will be spending many hours over the course of the Argentinian Presidency discussing this topic with other G20 Sherpas, including my friend, Indonesian Sherpa, Pak Rizal. Many young Australians visit Indonesia every year.

Those young people never envisaged a world where tourists could use smartphones to request a ride, order food or have their hair styled. But, of course, now Indonesia has exactly that with GoJek. Many people around the globe approach technological change with caution, even dread, rather than excitement. This is an old fear. Indeed, the common term used for those who fear technological change harks back to events that occurred two centuries ago.

Here we see Ned Ludd and followers destroying the machines that they feared were driving their families into poverty.
